We really miss Lanzini and Cresswell.

Both of them are our team's most consistent players.

Reid really does lack consistency in his game, great on his day, but not enough great days, and gets caught napping too often. He needs to show that we made the right call in preferring him over Tomkins.

Lanzini isn't a defensive/central midfielder, he just tends to drop deep a lot to get on the ball.

Oops, I forgot about Nordveit, my mistake! Still not sure where Obiang stands with Slav though at the minute, mind you I guess you have Lanzini to come back as well.

"Injuries to Noble or Kouyate would leave us very thin in that area"

really? when we have Obiang and Nordveit, not forgetting that Oxford did well as a defensive midfielder a couple of times last season too. I would suggest that central midfield is very well served at the moment.

Re: West Ham United v Juventus
Not a bad run out against a good team. The youngsters did well but can't see any of them being a starter as yet if we are going to progress as a team. Bit worried about the squad in certain areas though. Obviously full backs and a striker are needed but without Song and if Obiang is injured or surplus to requirements we look light in the middle. Injuries to Noble or Kouyate would leave us very thin in that area. Same with centre backs as injury to any of Ginge, Ogbonna or Reid puts us down to two regulars unless Slaven rates Burke or Oxford as first team cover.

Bit worried about Reid. I rate him highly when play is in front of him and he gets blocks in but when players get behind him or balls from wide come across he just doesn't defend particularly well. Wondering if Antonio at right back makes Reid look worse than he is because if Antonio gets dragged out of position then so will Reid.

Had to settle with watching the game at home and have to say that John Hartson is a pretty poor co commentator.
Highlight of his dumb comments came just before our equaliser when the Juve player fouled as he was caught out and Big John says that it was "clever" and the British defenders need to learn how to be just as "clever".
As soon as he said it I said to my boys that is in no way clever when you are playing against Andy Carroll and he's waiting to attack the free kick.
Booom!

Whan to rethink that Jonny boy?

Josh Cullen put in a good shift today, didn't look out of place with the first team. Shame he didn't get the standing ovation others got when he was subbed. Our next Noble?

Sir Alf 11:09 Sun Aug 7
Re: West Ham United v Juventus
The last goal was actually more Collins fault since he was closest to and marking Zaza. If you watch you see Zaza spinning off from Collins with Oxford then trying to make a recovering clearance. But he was Collins man not Oxfords.

Oxford was not the main problem for their winning goal in other words. :-)

Re: West Ham United v Juventus
Oh he is nowhere near playing but thought he moved well and has potential but he certainly isn't a 16 yo like Rooney was.
Will be a couple of years before I'd even look at him beyond the u18's and u21's
He is tiny to start with so needs feeding up

Oh, absolutely Sven. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the kid and would love to see him progress and he may well do so. But I don't see it being this season, or the next probably. Which as you say is only to be expected with a 16 year old. I didn't mean to sound critical of him, all I am saying is that the way he has been given opportunities ahead of others this pre season could be seen to suggest that the club see him as something exceptional already. And I don't.

Harsh on Quina
HE IS 16 !
Looks a neat little player but was a bit over confident a few times but you'd rather see that in a kid for mine.

Re: West Ham United v Juventus
My tuppence worth, for what it's worth. Players wise.

Adrian solid. Not really much he could have done about the goals and didn't have much else to do but what he did he did well.

Antonio....was Antonio. Much better when pushed forward (although mostly left wing rather than right, interestingly).

Burke came on at right back at half time and looked comfortable.

Reid pretty awful to be honest. At fault for their second (I think, could have been their first actually).

Ogbonna excellent especially given the varying degress of incompetence being displayed to his right while he was on. Oxford and Collins subsequently came on as the centre halves.

Collins was playing like it was the cup final and did everything we've come to expect, plus some decent distribution actually. Clearly wants a starting place and feels one is up for grabs, and given Reid's performance today he may be right.

Oxford did some good things but also a few shaky things and one apalling thing - completely at fault for their winner by getting the wrong side of Zaza AND misjudging the flight of the ball. A way to go yet, if we didn't realise it yet. Hopefully he realises that too.

Byram looked surprisingly comfortable at left back, although he did have a funny five minutes late on where two or three times he got too far forward and then turned backwards to give Cullen, who was trying to cover him, a couple of hospital passes - one of which nearly got Cullen crocked. But that aside, not too shoddy.

Nortveldt the only outfield player to play the whole game. Composed throughout although didn't see much of his passing. Seemed to be doing a lot of the organising in midfield and very disciplined positionally. Think he could be key this season.

Cullen impressed me. Didn't do anything spectacular but didn't look out of place either. Him and Burke the pick of the youngsters on display today.

Noble solid, better in the first half before all the changes started. Outpaced a few times by their midfield breaking quickly but he won't be the only player that happens to this season; they're impressive.

First time I've seen Ferghouli live, and he was quite anonymous to be honest. I'm hopeful there is more to come.

Valencia...oh, Valencia. Stayed on a long time and you get the sense Bilic is just willing him to come good (and I'd love to see it too). But it's just not going to happen. Pushed wide to be fair, but still it was a typical Valencia performance. Looks good at times, then end product is zero. His confidence looks utterly shot to me and for all concerned he probably needs a fresh start somewhere else.

Carroll certainly wasn't in 'unplayable' mode but you can't take away the fact he scored two goals. Nice persistence for the first too, after a smart save by Buffon. Showed he more than has something to give still, and also contributed defensively especially during a hilarious bit of ping-pong in our area at one point.

Browne came on and played central midfield. Haven't seen much of him before so I may have been mistaken but that was a bit of a surprise to me as I'd imagined him to be more of a number 10 type. Looked technically sound and got stuck in a bit.

Quina came on again - didn't do anything wrong but I really can't see why the club seem to rate him so much. Nothing special to my eyes.

Payet didn't have much of an influence bar a couple of crosses/ free kicks and looked very much like a player who has only just returned to training. Which is of course to be expected as that's exactly what he is. Seemed he was given a run out for the sake of it to be honest and can't see him being ready to start against Chelsea. Even so, you could still see he was head and shoulders above most of the players on the pitch by that point in terms of natural talent. Which again, is nothing more or less than we expect these days.
Fletcher came on for Carroll and looked lively but didn't really have many opportunities to do anything more. I don't know whether this was down to a lack from the player himself or just a lack of confidence from his teammates, but one curious thing I noticed was that despite being tall and playing centrally, we didn't aim to hit him early in the same way we had been doing with Carroll - Adrian's goal kicks in particular noticeably changed when he came on. So for whatever reason, I don't think he's necessarily the alternative to Carroll that looking at his frame many had been expecting.

Samuelson looked eager to get involved and showed some good touches. That's about it really, but the game was fragmented by then so not necessarily his fault. Certainly not a performance to push any claims to progress though.

Page came on late for Byram and didn't really do much to judge him on. Surely if he was seen as an option at left back he would have had more time.

Good to see Carroll get a brace against Juventus, not bad for a donkey.

Game that didn't really tell us any more than we already knew. Gave the kids a run out which was good.
Second half was a bit scrappy and disjointed due to all the subs. Juventus worthy winners.

Delighted for Josh Cullen & Reece Burke, really nice lads, model pros who have worked hard to get this far and deserve all the success they get, well done boys.
